LICHTSPIEL
A 360° projection mapping in Munich's former Sendlinger Tor cinema: an open call by Extrabright that turned a historic Lichtspielhaus into a collective play of light.
THE INTERVENTION
Lichtspiel is the old German word for cinema, and it was the only brief we gave. In early 2026, as part of Das neue DINGS, the interim use of Munich’s former Sendlinger Tor cinema curated by broke.today, we launched and curated an open call. The theme was simply LICHTSPIEL, and every artist was free to interpret it in their own way. Around ten works were submitted. On the night, they took over the entire auditorium. The cinema no longer showed a film. It became the medium itself: a building made for projected light, now completely wrapped in it.

THE METHOD
Together with our technical partner Limelight, we mapped the whole auditorium with four Full HD projectors: the ceiling, both side walls, the back wall and the screen. This created a continuous 360° surface. From this setup we built a mapping template and shared it with all participating artists, so every contribution could be designed for the exact geometry of the room.
The evening followed a two-part dramaturgy. It opened with a live moment: our installation NOICE, accompanied by a pianist, followed by a short talk on stage with broke.today and Extrabright. After that, the stage dissolved into the space. All contributions ran in a continuous loop, and visitors could move freely through the cinema and experience the works at their own pace. Our own contribution was a linear piece built from simple forms and shapes. It was choreographed to music and staged the architecture of the room itself.

THE OBSERVATION
The audience read the evening for what it was: an art installation, and a deliberately experimental one. That openness was received with real enthusiasm. Even though everyone worked with the same template, the works could hardly have been more different, and the room came alive in a new way with each one. What stayed with us most was how people used the space. They grabbed a drink, sat down, talked and stayed, often for hours. The cinema changed from a place of focused, forward-facing attention into a place to linger. The light no longer asked to be watched. It surrounded people while they spent time together.
