NOICE
From the high-energy MCBW opening party to an immersive cinematic piano performance. The evolution of NOICE: a fluid, frequency-mapped mirror of sound and space.
THE INTERVENTION
NOICE is an ongoing exploration into the visual representation of sound. What started as a reactive ambient study for the MCBW 2024 Opening Party has evolved into a full-scale cinematic intervention. The project functions as a digital nervous system for physical spaces: it listens, processes, and reflects the acoustic energy of its surroundings. Whether capturing the chaotic, high-energy chatter of an opening event or the delicate precision of a live piano performance, NOICE transforms intangible sound waves into a continuous, fluid particle architecture.

THE METHOD
The technical core is a custom-built TouchDesigner engine that utilizes a multi-microphone array to "scan" the room. Unlike simple volume-reactive visuals, NOICE employs complex frequency mapping: specific tonal ranges are hard-coded to behavioral parameters of the particles—defining their velocity, turbulence, and flow.
Phase 01 (Opening Party): Focused on low-threshold interaction via screens. Visitors could disrupt the fluid stream by shouting or through the ambient noise of the crowd, testing the limits of direct, social feedback loops.
Phase 02 (Sendlinger Tor Cinema): Scaled to a 4-projector mapping setup, the system translated a live pianist’s performance onto the cinema’s historic walls and ceiling, turning the entire architecture into a visual extension of the instrument.

THE OBSERVATION
Across both iterations, we observed how the same algorithmic logic creates entirely different atmospheres based on the input and the scale. From an energetic, social "shout-to-act" tool to a meditative, high-art performance, NOICE proves that generative systems are never "finished." They are living frameworks that adapt to the soul of a location. The project remains in a state of constant versioning.
